Q & A with Amateur Featherweight Fighter Zurina Turrey

The sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) has been dominated by men in the past, but that’s changing as more and more women take to the ring. With the popularity of female fighters such as Ronda Rousey, Miesha Tate, Holly Holm, and Joanna Jedrzejczyk growing, more and more women are stepping into the MMA world to try their hand at fighting.  In preparation for her upcoming bout against Angelica Flores on March 26th. We recently had the chance to catch up with amateur featherweight MMA fighter Zurina Turrey to learn more about her passion for the sport, her training regimen, and how she balances her love of MMA with her love of dogs.

Early Life

Born and raised in Phoenix, AZ, Zurina Turrey spends her days training at Legion MMA.

How did you get started in MMA?

I was talking to my brother when he said that one of his friends asked if he could help wrestle at Legion during the day. I had been looking for a gym to attend and was about to join Siege MMA. Everyone there is extremely cool. I went, and that’s how it began.

Mixed Martial Arts Career

What 1-2 things do you currently do in your training that have been keys to your success?

I do a couple of things. For one, I have fun with my training partners and make sure we work hard. Two, I soak up any lesson someone is willing to take the time and teach.

What has been your biggest accomplishment in MMA or any sport to date?

When I played softball, we were playing against Sunrise Mountain at their home field, and someone hit a liner right past third base. As the last runner was coming in home, I backed up the back catcher who ended up missing the ball. We were still able to make the play due to me being the back catchers back up. It was awesome!

What 1-2 things do you believe differentiates you from your competitors?

My hunger.

Have you experienced a breakthrough, and if so, what led to it?

Not yet but surely we will!

Inspiration

What was the best advice you were ever given?

Focus on what you have on your plate today. Don’t worry about tomorrow’s meal, it will come.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

My Grandparents, my family, and my friends.

My Dog Dovakhiin has always been by my side and that I love him. Treat your dogs right and they will love you, even after long training days. Make the time to play with them because they miss you and time doesn’t rewind!

What's Next?

At just 26 years old, Turrey (2-1) is still developing as a fighter and will get another chance to showcase her skills on March 26th when she takes on Angelica Flores (2-2-1) at RUF 46 from the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, AZ.
